Custom Commands GNOME Shell Extension

Adds a panel icon that runs a configurable shell command or script when clicked. Both the command and icon are user-configurable via the extension’s preferences.

Installation

(Submitted to GNOME Extensions for Review, but you can set it up locally)

  1. Clone the repo to ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/custom-commands@kartikaybagla.com/
  2. Compile schemas:
    glib-compile-schemas ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/custom-commands@kartikaybagla.com/schemas/
  3. Restart GNOME Shell (Alt+F2, then r if on X11) or log out/in
  4. Enable the extension via GNOME Extensions app or:
    gnome-extensions enable custom-commands@kartikaybagla.com

Usage

  • Click the panel icon to run the configured command
  • Open preferences from GNOME Extensions app to set the command and icon name

Configuration

  • Shell Script Command: Full command or script path to run
  • Icon Name: Symbolic icon name (e.g., utilities-terminal-symbolic)

Troubleshooting

  • Ensure schemas are compiled and placed correctly
  • Use valid symbolic icon names (see)

Disclaimer

My knowledge of GJS is non-existent, I created this extension at 2AM using GJS docs and an LLM. Most of this repository is AI generated, but human reviewed and tested.

Credit for the idea goes to PRATAP-PANABAKA from this thread for creating the original extension which I updated to the latest GNOME shell version (48).
